Tecnalia: Biobased, recyclable and intelligent packaging for fresh meat

At PackBenefit we are proud to be part of the innovative REDYSIGN initiative , which aims to transform the fresh meat packaging sector through the development of a new bio-based, intelligent and recyclable packaging for fresh meat products.

This project, led by TECNALIA, represents a crucial step towards the production of sustainable packaging, aligned with the principles of efficiency in the use of resources such as energy, water and raw materials.

The new REDYSIGN packaging, in whose creation we actively participated, is not only 98% composed of wood derivatives, such as lignocellulosic macro-, micro- and nanofibers, lignin and sugars.

Food waste

It also has smart innovations aimed at preventing food waste

  • A sensor that provides early detection of possible spoilage processes.
  • Another that monitors the cold chain in distribution and storage. This capability not only improves the safety and quality of the final product, but also brings significant benefits in terms of sustainability.

Recycling efficiency

REDYSIGN incorporates key solutions to optimize packaging recycling: embedded identification markers that allow sorting of potentially contaminated packaging at treatment plants, and advanced oxidation treatments that reduce both energy consumption and the environmental cost of fiber recycling.

As a company committed to sustainability and circular economy, we at PackBenefit are honored to participate in this multidisciplinary consortium together with 12 partners from various European countries such as TECNALIA, Eroski, Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre, Metgen, Valmet Technologies, Fibenol, Mcairlaid’s Vliesstoffe, HOLOSS, VTT, RISE-PFI, Zabala Innovation and Fenix TNT.

Together, we are driving packaging solutions that not only benefit the environment, but also transform the food sector by reducing dependence on plastics and improving packaging circularity.

The REDYSIGN project (GA no. 101112521) is funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking, a public-private partnership of the Biobased Industries Consortium and the European Commission.
